HP printer not showing ink levels on w8

I'm using the same HP 1600 desk jet printer on my new windows 8. When I used it with my XP, the ink levels would show. I wasn't sure if I should put the disk in to reinstall in case that would cause damage?
I'm really missing those ink levels showing. Is there an easy fix? Thanks
