fax distinct ring goes off for long distance phone calls

My HP Officejet 4622 has a distinct ring feature that we use. It works great for local phone numbers. But when some one from out of our area code calls, the fax machine gives it the distinct ring of a fax coming in...What can I do to correct this? Thanks!
