HP LJ Color 5550 Error 13.01.00 Trace to gear on paper pickup assembly

Hello:

Have an HP LJ Color 5550 with approx page count of 247000 and 3X recently have had error 13.01.00 and the usual message is jam in tray 1.

If you attempt to print from tray 2, it looks like it is going to print, then you get the above error message.

Opening the printer finds no jams in either tray 1 or 2. The rollers in tray 2 have been replaced  recently due to wear and the pick roller in tray 1 appears good.

When this happens,  if you look at the leading edge of the paper in tray 1, you will see that the paper doesn't hit the paper flag because the lift mechanism is in the wrong position. Tried power cycling the printer and the mechanism never goes to the proper position. You can turn the gears on tray 2 manually to bring the mechanism to the proper position.

The printer still will not pick after the above, you have to remove the paper input assembly and reseat the gear that drives the gears in the tray. This gear is in the cavity of where tray 2 sits, and is on the LHS on the top. If you attempt to rotate that gear, it doesn't feel right and that's when you realize this gear is the issue. The gear seems to pop into its home position fairly easily and seems to lock into this position.

My question is, is the gear and the paper pickup assy the issue or is the issue the tray?  Both are fairly expensive parts and reseating that gear is relatively easy now that i know it is the issue, but the downtime is a hassle for the customer.

Any thoughts appreciated.

thanx

dave
