Officejet Pro 8600 Installation won't complete - wired network connection

Windows XP Professional operating system.  Had the OfficeJet Pro 8600 for about 2 months which was installed to the network and worked.  Exchanged it last night for a new one (when using the glass for copying or scanning horizontal color lines appeared down the page - did not happen when using the feeder).  Anyway - plugged in the new one in this morning, connected the phone cord and the ethernet cord.  Opened the software on the computer for scanning (previously installed with the old all-in-one) and  the scanning software didn't recognize the new unit.  I uninstalled the software through Add & Remove programs in the Control Panel and deleted the printer from Add New Printer.  When I attempted to reinstall the software from the CD it gets just about to the end of the installation and I get a separate New Hardward Update Wizard pop up window with the message:  There was a problem installing this hardware: Officejet 4500 G510g-m An error occured during the installation of this device.  There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.    When I click finish on that window it goes back to the Officejet Pro 8600 installation window and suggests I download from the hp support page.  I downloaded the driver & software from the website, saved it to the desktop, ran that installation - same errors occur.   I do also have the Officejet 4500 g510g-m installed on the network and it works fine - there is no issue with the driver for that device.    Any help would be greatly appreciated!
